1952,1988+1973 US-50 Chesapeake Bay Bridge at Annapolis, MD

(Bridge Hunter; no Historic Bridges; B&TSatellite)

"Original two-lane spans with through-truss suspension bridge and regular cantilever design built 1949-52 and opened 1952; second three-lane span with deck suspension and arched cantilever opened 1973; rehabilitated 1988" [Bridge Hunter Index]  The bridge rises 186' above the water. [BayDreaming

"When the Bay Bridge’s original span opened in July 1952, its 4.3 miles made it the world’s third longest bridge, as well as the world’s longest continuous over-water steel structure. Several superstructure sections of the bridge were built on barges and floated into place." [BayBridge] Once again, ABC (Accelerated Bridge Construction) is not a recent invention.

Like the other Chesapeake Bay crossing, you can hire someone to drive your car across the bridge. In this case, the height adds to the scariness.

The original bridge is on the right (South) and the additional bridge is on the left. The third lane on the newer bridge is reversible depending on traffic conditions. For example, people coming home from the beaches on a Sunday evening.

The new bridge has a massive cable-anchor pier at the end of the suspended span as would be expected for a suspension bridge. (Note the two bridge inspection trucks on the left side of this view.)

I had noticed that the pier at the end of the original suspended span was spindly. Looking closer, that is because additional cables go down to a concrete pier under the first truss span. That struck me as a clever (economical) design, I wonder why the new bridge did not do it that way.

Because the street view car was driving in the slow lane, I can't get a good view of the concrete pier and cable attachment. This photo shows that the pier for the truss next to the suspended span is solid concrete, as opposed to the pile piers for the other deck trusses, to provide an anchor for the cables.

In the Google search results I saw some entries about a third bridge. Now I see a proposal for an 8-lane bridge to replace the existing bridges. [wbaltv] Just skimming some of the articles, the "need" for more capacity is to accommodate beach traffic. I think Federal money should pay for adding more lanes to I-80 through Joliet and replacing the Des Plaines River Bridges before it pays for some people having sun and fun on the beaches.

The five lanes are set-up so that all traffic can be moved to one span if needed, running in two-way operation.
When there is heavy demand eastbound, one lane of the (normally) westbound span will run eastbound if weather conditions permit - this is generally done on weekday afternoons and on the day before a major beach holiday (Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day)
Dan Murphy: Indeed there was 2-way traffic flow on the westbound span on this day. It's a creative operational maneuver in terms of maximizing the capacity of the spans, but it also highlights how antiquated the crossing has become.

The William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge (official name) carries US-50 and US-301 over the Chesapeake Bay connecting Maryland’s Eastern and Western Shores.

Patrick O'Donnell: Dan O'Donohoe 1,600 feet span from tower to their respective towers. The current record holder is a bridge in Turkey at 6,637 feet. The longest in the US is the Verrrazzano Narrows in NYC at 4,460 feet. China right now has three under construction that are 7,000+ feet, the longest being 7,546 feet. A fourth is scheduled to break ground later this year.

November 22, 1978: A never ending job: A paint crew member straddles a steel I-beam underneath the old Chesapeake Bay Bridge in his constant task of painting the 4.5-mile structure. It takes five years and 30,000 gallons of silvery aluminum paint to cover the bridge from one end to the other. When that is accomplished, it’s time to start all over again.
Dave Frieder: Bridges are NEVER painted from end to end continuously. A bridge would be fully painted but even with today's modern non lead based paints they are only touched up over the years. After 15-20 years THEN they are full painted again.

After the Francis Scott Key Bridge tragedy, I looked for pier protections on a satellite map. I could not find any! I don't see any in this view either. Yet every ship that goes to Baltimore passes under this bridge.

[A comment indicated they also sent four tugboats with it. The containers were not removed in Baltimore because it needs the weight to get under the bridges. Lots of comments about "out to sea." I looked at a map and it is true that you can get to Norfolk without leaving the Chesapeake Bay.]

 David Huntt: Federal inspectors have stated the bridge is in need of “urgent repairs”, and has not had a vulnerability risk assessment.
I trust NTSB over MDTA.
[I did not find the NTSB calling for urgent repairs. The NTSB complaint is that they have not conformed to some red tape requirements.]
Jerry Meyers: This structural engineer has given this post some thought, so an amended comment as this may be a serious situation would like to motivate a reasoned discussion .
Looking at the bridge girder on the pier, it is NOT centered as designed and can not transmit compressive stress as envisioned into the concrete pier. The load path from the right horizontal girder is almost non existent. The off centered placement must be inducing more compressive stress on part of the pier. Likely transmitting extra torque or moment into the pier.
Looking further at the bridge pier in question as seen in the first comment, the right horizontal girder is almost completely offset from the pier. Very likely, in time, it would not be able to transfer its load to the column. From the photo, it is impossible to determine the composition of the girder resting on the pier. If it is a box girder, we could have local bucking on its right vertical side and over-stress on its horizontal sides due to bending moments. Wonder if horizontal forces on the bridge deck is causing this.
If the right horizontal bridge girder is so displaced to the right, there are likely dislocations on adjoining piers.
A word of caution to those declaring this safe, looks like we are taking credit for the safety factor which is not in the intent of Codes to be used for design. They are there for emergency repair or what we structural engineers call “run away time.”
Strongly recommend an immediate expert peer review and a rapid remediation plan if called for. Have not said this for a while, but MDOT and Gov Moore need put up their calculations and prove me wrong. Would be delighted to stand corrected. We do not need a second bridge collapse in Maryland.
[I would like to know what the design safety factor was and what percentage of that factor is lost because the cap is no longer centered over the pile. And why did the pile move and how much more is it going to move?]

[Did MDOT tell the reporter that cracks were the issue, or was that the reporter's mistake? The issue is that the pier cap is not centered over its pile.]

"MDTA conducted an inspection of the pier yesterday and confirmed that there is no indication of movement or distress at the location," MDTA said.
Here is how MDTA summed things up when describing what some could perceive as deteriorating conditions in the photos.
"While the image of the pier cap appears off-centered, the bridge girders - the key structural components supporting the span - are aligned and centered with the pier cap. Importantly, the positioning has not changed since the bridge's construction."
There is no way that I'm believing that the bridge was built like that. If it was, why did the state accept it?

The new bridge spans would also be roughly 50 feet taller, making the new structure the same height as the Key Bridge being built in Baltimore. 
Taller bridges let today’s massive container ships pass under and access the Port of Baltimore.

Cook County Farm (Dunning Asylum), the "Crazy Train" and the B&OCT Mayfair Extension

It was a hospital car with a doctor and a couple of nurses aboard. The train car was called the ‘crazy train’ and had a security guard at each exit so inmates couldn’t escape." Paul Musselman: In the Mount Olive cemetery, you can see the right of way for the tracks that went thru going toward Dunning..there is still a "8 miles per hour" speed limit sign from WAY BACK, at the old ROW.....
Doug Kaniuk: Notes: the Milwaukee branch (from the south) to Dunning ended before Montrose Ave., The two lines were never connected. The line was never connected at Irving Park. The line was built as a rate disput between railroads. Only service on the line were work trains to maintain the tracks. All service on the line ended in 1905, tracks removed 1910. Land that the track was on disposed by the B&OCT 1910 to 1940.

This 1908 map shows a branch line connecting with the Milwaukee Road just south of Mayfair Station in Chicago. The branch appears to run west out toward the old County Farm grounds.
Does anyone have any information on this branch line?

Edward Moran: My mom grew up near the area now known as Hiawatha Park at Forest Preserve Drive. She said she never saw a train on the line except when they tore up the tracks, I think after WWII. This line is the present day Forest Preserve Drive between Montrose and Belmont. You can still see a bride abutment over the Des Plaines River when you are driving east on Belmont. It is on the SE side of the bridge.

An eye-opening article... but, after all, it is a part of Chicago's history. How can 38,000+ people be buried in mass graves and then forgotten?

Ralph Modjeski and some of his bridges

These notes are some of the factoids in PBS's Point of View show: "Bridging Urban America: The Story of Ralph Modjeski." I recorded it on Aug 9, 2017.

If I understand the video correctly, his first bridge was the Rock Island Railroad Bridge across the Mississippi River known as the Government Bridge because it serves the Rock Island Arsenal.

 07:45  There is a photo of a steel mill. I recognized that the mill was probably the Joliet Iron Works. Fortunately, those notes begin with the photo from which the TV image was cropped. I'm glad I already have the photo because it is neat.

07:58  1894-1896 GOVERNMENT BRIDGE   ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS
Earlier in the show, it talks about Abraham Lincoln helping the railroads fight the steamship industry for the right to build a bridge across the Mississippi River. And it showed a plaque that indicates the first bridge was built in 1856. The commander of the Rock Island Arsenal fights Washington for a stronger bridge across the Mississippi. During construction, the swing span was destroyed by an ice flow after the temperature rose to 40 degrees just a few weeks before water commerce on the river was expected to begin. At 9:50 is an video of the temporary lift bridge that Modjeski built from an existing span. I've never seen this bridge before. He finished with a day to spare, and it operated well during its 3-month lifetime. The completed bridge used a 56 horsepower motor. Recall that electricity was bleeding edge technology at this time. The record breaking swing span was designed in just three months and erected in fifteen months. It is the world's only swing span with unlimited rotation.

12:14  1900 CHCAGO, ILLINOIS
He opened his office in the prestigious 17-story Monadnock Building. It was "the tallest commercial iron-frame building ever constructed." He was one of the consulting engineers that reviewed the city's design for bascule bridges. (The Courtland Bridge is an example of the first generation design.) These bridges have become known as the Chicago Style Bridge. At this time Joseph Strauss was his senior draftsman. He was married to a cousin that was also from Poland. Actually, he was married to his job, and his wife took their three children on many trips to Europe. Eventually, his family stayed there.

Pin-construction was revolutionary and speeded up construction.

16:57  1909-1911 CROOKED RIVER RAILROAD BRIDGE   TERREBONNE, OREGON

18:55  1900-1907 QUEBEC BRIDGE   QUEBEC, CANADA
This segment described the bridge designed by Theodore Cooper that collapsed. Cooper was interested in designing the longest cantilever bridge in the world. He made the span longer without redoing his calculations and he insisted that nobody check his design. He did not want to be subservient to anybody. Of the errors that were made, the main one is that he underestimated the weight of the bridge,

23:57  1908-1917 Reconstruction of  QUEBEC BRIDGE   QUEBEC, CANADA
Modjeski helped design the replacement bridge that used twice as much steel and much of it was nickel steel. The center span fell as it was being lifted when it was just 2' from its final location, and it is still at the bottom of the river. This bridge completed Canada's transcontinental railroad. To this day, it is still the longest cantilever bridge.

It would be the largest bascule bridge of its time. The patent holders Rall and Strauss fought for the design win. Rall won.

36:22   1909 MANHATTAN BRIDGE  NEW YORK, NY
He opened an office in NYC and was the consulting engineer for the Manhattan Bridge. Frank Masters was in charge of the NYC office.
The chief engineer of the bridge, Moisseiff, introduced a new design analysis technique: deflection theory. I noticed that Moisseiff worked with Modjeski on later bridge designs.

I have skipped the intro that explained that his mother was an opera singer and that at one time he played the piano four hours each day because he was considering a career as a professional piano player.

Modjeski made the transition from railroad to vehicular bridges and constructed 19 bridges in this decade.

42:26   1921-1926 BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BRIDGE Formerly the Delaware River Bridge 
The most difficult part was the foundation for the cable anchorage piers. The rock was 65' to 110' below the surface of the ground. Silicon steel was used in this bridge. And one third of the steel was nickel steel. It was the longest suspension bridge in the world, and it significantly pushed the size of the cables. Information from a diagram at 46:08:

50:17   1923-1930 FDR MID-HUDSON BRIDGE In Partnership with Moran
(Moran was the foundation engineer.) This was the first suspension span that had a full length cable rehabilitation. But I did not catch the year of the rehabilitation.

55:43   1927-1929  AMBASSADOR BRIDGE
Replacing the traditional cold-drawn acid steel wire with an innovative heat-treated cable wire proved to be a problem. After some broken wires were found before this bridge was opened, Modjeski and MIT did some research and determined that 11,000 miles of wires would have to be replaced. The crossing still opened nine months ahead of schedule. Today, the bridge handles 25% of the traffic between US and Canada.

59:41   1926-1935 THE HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE   In Partnership with Masters and Chase
They used the technique of building sand-filled artificial islands through which the caissons were sunk almost 200' into the existing soil. This technique had been used once previously, but not in such an intense river flow.

1:09:11   1931-1936 SAN FRANCISCO - OAKLAND BAY BRIDGE Formerly Transbay Bridge
At 1:11:17 is a map of the various proposals offered by high-profile engineers seeking the commission of the bridge. The 8-mile bridge would be the biggest in the world. The center anchor pier for the tandem suspension bridge for the west bay crossing will hold the remaining bridge if one of them somehow "disappears." The island tunnel that connects the east and west spans has a 75' diameter bore. It remains the largest bored tunnel ever built. Its $77m cost made it the most expensive public works of its time. It was built under budget, ahead of schedule and without major catastrophes. It also had the longest single span. The 1989 earthquake damaged the east side where the piers rested on 100' timber piles. The piers for the suspension bridges and the cantilever span are concrete down to the bedrock and they survived the earthquake. But the suspension bridges have had "seismic retrofitting" and the east bridge has been replaced since we now know much more about building structures to resist earthquake forces. The replacement bridge is a "self-anchored suspension span" and cost $6.4b.

He built over 40 bridges.

Judging by the control cabins, this photo is of this DL&W bridge rather than the Upper Hackensack Bridge.

It was a hazy, muggy day in August 1984. The DL&W MU's were on borrowed time. Since I like infrastructure as much as anyone, how about this shot at the Hackensack Bridge? Today, I am not sure how I got there. Certainly today big frowns would be made. But back then you could get away with stuff like this.

"This bridge is one of several vertical lift bridges in this area. The lift span is a Parker truss span with a very defined arch-like shape to it. There is a long series of approach spans leading up to the bridge. The DL&W had two bridges over the Hackensack within a couple of miles of each other. Thus the names Upper Hack ("U") and Lower Hack ("L"). "H" marks Erie's HX Bridge.

1963 I-75 International Bridge over St. Marys River between Sault Ste. Maries

I have focused so much on the railroad bridges, that I have ignored the road bridge. This photo taught me that the road bridge is significant in its own right. Before this bridge was built, vehicles had to use a ferry.

The International Bridge at Sault Ste Marie opened 59 years ago today, October 31, 1962.
Philip Fish: I had the opportunity to inspect this bridge, it is one of the best maintained bridges I have ever encountered. Hats off to the International Bridge Authority, they do a great job!!

This is the best overview I have seen. This is also a good view of the Soo Locks before the two old locks are replaced by one big lock.

This picture from 1963 features the fairly new International Bridge, but what caught my eye is the railroad roundhouse at the bottom, left of center.  A roundhouse was used to store, maintain, or reverse direction of locomotives.  This was back when trains were a major means of transport for goods and people to and from Sault Ste. Marie.  We can see the multiple railroad tracks and cars sitting south of the canal.  Follow the track north over the canal and you see where it splits, with the left track crossing over to Canada, and the right track, for passenger trains, heading toward Union Station on Portage.  Materna neg. #1883.4  Post by Collette Coullard

One advantage of road bridges is that it is generally easy to get a portal view.

We can also get a view of the controlling works for the St. Marys River. Part of the Algoma Steel Works is in the right background and in the left background we see a ship headed to the Soo Locks. And CN is doing some maintenance work on the railroad bridge.
