1942 128mw Pinopolis Lock & Dam (Lake Moultrie) and 1943 CSX/ACL Lift Bridge near Cooper River at Moncks Corner, SC

Dam: (Satellite)

"At its construction, the Pinopolis Lock was the highest single-lift lock in the entire world." The dam is 135' (41m) high and 11,500' (3.5km, 2.2 miles) long. Lake Moultrie connects to Lake Marion on the Santee River. [LakeHomesUSA]

This photo shows the waterway's depth and the lock's lift. Commercial traffic never developed on this waterway, but it is heavily used by recreational boats.

"From the Tailrace Canal, massive steel gates 80 feet [24m] high slowly open to allow boats to enter into the concrete box, 180 feet [55m] long and 60 feet [18m]] wide."
[Today's standard barge is 200' (61m) long. So the lock can't even hold a barge, let alone its towboat. That would explain the lack of commercial traffic. They also use the lock to move fish during spawning season.
(Update: I learned from a comment by Brandon Hayes on a post that the standard size was originally 175'x26' and that a 200'x35' barge was considered a jumbo. So the lock was designed to handle two of the original sized barges.]

Jefferies Hydroelectric Station — Moncks Corner, S.C.
The birthplace of Santee Cooper, the hydro began generating power on Feb. 17, 1942. Originally called the Pinopolis Power Plant, its five units are capable of producing 128 megawatts.
The Pinopolis Lock at Jefferies Hydroelectric Station was the highest single-lift lock in the world at the time of its construction in 1942. The lock allows boats to travel between the Tailrace Canal at the base of the Pinopolis Dam and the surface of Lake Moultrie. The Tailrace Canal is four miles long and flows into the Cooper River.
The lock is open year-round from 30 minutes after dawn to 30 minutes before dusk. Operations are suspended during thunderstorms and rough-water conditions. Call 843-899-LOCK (5625) for lock information.
