Glen Miller posted Looking north from the Clark Street Bridge in 1865, Chicago. [I believe we are looking "at" the bridge, not "from" the bridge.] |
The last swing bridge lasted until the current trunnion bridge was built in 1929. It was the last swing bridge to be replaced on the Main Branch. This site had an 1840 floating bridge and 1856, 1872 (because of the 1871 fire), and 1888 swing bridges. [Chicago Loop Bridges] The bridge was replaced in 1929 because of an allision. Noach Hoffman posted Chicago River with View of Clark Street Bridge by William Clusmann. Ca. 1911 Collection of the Chicago History Museum. My guess is that this terrific painting could use a good cleaning and deserves it. Even viewing this piece dirty with not great photography I feel this is one of the best early Chicago River paintings that I've seen to date. |
1 of 3 photos posted by Brendon Baillod It's been a good week for new acquisitions. This stereoview of the Chicago River arrived today. I believe it shows the Clark Street Bridge in the distance as a tug brings a three-masted schooner up the river on the right and a large passenger steamer approaches on the left. The card was extremely dirty when I received it with the vessels being mostly obscured. I cleaned it gently with a damp cloth and distilled water, which removed a surprising amount of dirt and grime. The cloth was black when I was done. This is a view I've never seen before and appears to be a 1880s or 1890s reproduction of an earlier original as evidenced by the single panel that comprises both the left and right images. The actual image looks to be from the 1870s. No names are visible on the vessels but the flag on the stern of the steamer is nearly legible. Brendon Baillod shared |
MWRD posted A view of the budding Chicago skyline, including the Jewelers Building (now 35 East Wacker) at right, is seen looking east from the Main Stem of the Chicago River towards a swing bridge at Clark Street on September 14, 1926. Brandon Baillod posted This early, undivided back postcard arrived today. It is a rotograph printed in Germany about 1905 showing a busy Chicago River at the Clark Street Bridge. At least nine vessels can be seen, five prominently. Unfortunately, none of them can be identified through their nameboards. The view is probably a winter layup scene as the vessels all seem to be battened down for the season. [I need to research the grain elevators in the background.] Brandon Baillod shared |
