Freight Car Fleet from 2005-2014

An interesting chart. If nothing else, it reinforces the idea that today's boxcar is the 53' container....
"Flat cars" must include deep-well cars for containers, and they are counting cars instead of platforms. I'm surprised the gondola number is so high. I sure don't see that percentage in the trains around here.

Michael A. Yeakey II posted two photos with the comment: "Apparently NYC is still a reporting mark.  Saw it on two adjacent boxcars today on the Marion line, roughly CP 2, outside the school where I teach. Oddly enough, one of the marks was on a CSX-labeled car.  The other was on a Conrail car, which makes more sense.  Is it fair to assume that the New York Central still exists on paper?"
Harold J. Krewer: In the Conrail split, NS and CSX both set up corporations to hold title to the rolling stock (Pennsylvania Lines LLC and New York Central Lines LLC, respectively).
In order to keep the restenciling work equitable to both parties, NS was allowed to keep the "CR" reporting mark for cars. but CSX was awarded it for use on locos.
Thus, ex-CR units on NS had "PRR" reporting marks and ex-CR cars on CSX got "NYC" marks. A lot of equipment kept those reporting marks even after full repaint due to equipment trusts/leases.
Josh Ośmiałowski: NYC was allowed to be dissolved in 2004, five years after the split. These are some early repaints and otherwise patched but untouched in 20 years cars.
