John Marvig posted Originally located on the double track Santa Fe main line, this bridge was constructed in 1888 to cross the I&M canal near downtown Chicago, east of Damen Avenue. The canal was filled in the early 1930s, and the unique Whipple Through Truss was moved to Shopton (Ft. Madison, Iowa) to serve as an overpass over the rail yards in 1934. Today, it remains virtually unchanged since being installed in Iowa. An additional girder span on the north end came from railroad origins at an unknown location. |
Dennis DeBruler commented on John's post This 1915 map shows that the IC and Santa Fe crossed the I&M Canal a little west of Robey Street, which was renamed to Damen Street. |
Dennis DeBruler commented on John's post I added a red line to this satellite image to show where I think the bridge was in Chicago. https://www.google.com/.../@41.8427254,-87.../data=!3m1!1e3 |
Dennis DeBruler commented on John's post This 1938 aerial photo shows what IC and Santa Fe built after they filled in the canal. On the right where there are tracks in a big concrete apron was the Chicago Produce Terminal. https://industrialscenery.blogspot.com/.../chicago... |
