Once again, I need to save the satellite image because it will change. It is a Baltimore deck truss. If you look at the shadow to the left of the bridge deck, you can see truss members.

Why talk about yet another truss bridge that is replaced with a girder bridge? Because the replacement was completed 11 months ahead of its initial schedule!

A July 2018 drone video shows that the old bridge was closed before the new bridge was done. Did KyDOT wait until the old bridge fell apart before they built a new one? No, it fell apart earlier than KyDOT expected. In fact, late in its life there had been multiple closures. KY reached an agreement with Walsh to accelerate the schedule by 11 months and deliver the bridge by the end of 2018 for $31.5m. The new schedule is even more impressive because they could not work on the foundations for three months because lake levels rose to some of its highest levels in history. [WalshGroup]

Because the lake is 200' deep, "Walsh Construction built bridge piers from the bottom of the spread footing to the top cap. Piers were constructed above water on barges and incrementally lowered with strand jacks, eliminating the dangerous work of deep underwater construction." [WalshGroup]

Steel girders that weighed up to 178,000 pounds were first installed in September across five segments, and deck pours began in mid-November. Walsh Construction announced the bridge would open to traffic on Friday, December 21. Final pavement and other finishing operations will be completed in the spring.

The bridge was dismantled piece by piece, so there is no "energetic felling" videos. The premature closure of the old bridge did create some additional business for the marinas in the area. [WKYT]
