NS/Southern Bridges over Savannah River and Street running in Augusta, GA

1853: (Bridge Hunter) (The date comes from this reference.)

Street View

My original reason for noting this bridge was that it shows the Savanna River used to be navigable this far up the river. But after taking a closer look, it is notable because those steel girders not only have to hold up trains, they have to hold up the movable span, and its counterweight, when it rolls back to open.

It is no surprise that the previous bridge was a swing bridge.

The current bridge is called Sixth Street Bridge because the tracks exit the bridge onto 6th Street and go down the middle of that street through downtown Augusta for ten blocks to Taylor Street.

This is the 6th Street Railroad Bridge in Augusta, GA.  It is a bascule bridge that was built in 1912 and carries a Norfolk Southern rail line over the Savannah River.  Photo is courtesy of HistoricBridges.org.

Norfolk Southern bridge across the Savannah River. Behind me the railroad runs down the center of an active street. Note how shiny the rails are after a week of rain.
Structures on either side of bridge entrance are portals of the levee designed to be closed in the event of a flood to prevent the city from flooding.

Here's another view of the same bridge. I used to live near the far end of the bridge.
The police reported they thought the guy was confused. There is a 5th street bridge over to North Augusta. The street running speed limit when I lived there was 5 mph. I'm sure not much has changed in that respect. Actually a train did come but stopped in time. This was a 5:00 AM event soooo........BTW, police reported the speedo was stuck at 60 mph. I think all the clues are there. Haha
