Ken Mizell Flickr, License: Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) I got the Flickr link from AlluringWorld, which explains: "There are 6 lanes for traffic, where the total length of the Centennial is measured at 1,052 meters (3,451 feet), with a clearance of 80 meters (262 feet) below the bridge. There are two 184 meters (604 feet) towers on each side of the bridge, and in between is actually located the main span which is 420 meters (1,380 feet)." |
roadtraffic-technology "A floating crane, called Titan, is permanently stationed in the canal to be used for rescue services, repairing lock gates, etc. Since this machine needed to be able to pass under the new bridge, sufficient clearance was necessary, hence the unusually high vertical clearance. Titan is one of three cranes that was originally built in Germany and taken to the US after World War II; it has been deployed in the Panama Canal ever since." This "segmental concrete bridge" was designed to withstand the earthquakes that are frequent in this area. |
