Panguitch Dam Breach near Panguitch, UT

(Satellite)

In 1872, they built a masonry dam to increase the height of a natural lake. In 1942 they added a concrete "wall" on top of the masonry dam to make it higher. A leak developed on Apr 8, 2024, because wind and ice pushed the top part of the wall over creating a leak at the base of the wall. [10:28 video] Please watch that video for more details.

Fortunately, the old part of the dam held. They are dumping riprap on the face of the dam to backfill the wall, and they have cut the ice to relieve the pressure. The inclination of the wall has already gone down from 8 degrees to 2 degrees. At the bottom of this photo, we can see the outlet pipe that is lowering the height of the lake.
