tylin "With an overall length of 2,975 feet [907m], the Kanawha River Bridge features a 760-foot-long [232m] main span and opened to traffic as the longest box girder span in the United States." The structural depth of the concrete box girder bridge varies between 16' (4.9m) and 38' (11.6m). "The Kanawha River Bridge is the first long-span, segmental box girder structure to be built in West Virginia using the balanced cantilever method." |
WVDOT Construction of the new bridge was planned to be complete in 2010 with a cost of $93.6m. "Construction by balanced cantilever using form traveloers with 175 cast-in-place segments" |
A dual steel box girder design was also developed. But the concrete box girder design was cheaper.
modjeski "To span the river, our technical experts engineered a design featuring a record-setting 760-ft. dual box girder main span. Great in scale, yet elegant in form, the haunched girder design measured over 30-ft [9.1m] deep at the pier tops and 15-ft [4.6m] at the main span centerline." This design was pursued after also considering tied arch and truss designs. |

The old bridge is obviously a steel plate girder design.
