1929,1971 UP/MoPac Baring Cross Bridges over Arkansas River in Little Rock, AK

1890: (Bridge Hunter)  Destroyed by a flood in 1927
1929: (Bridge HunterHistoric Bridges; Satellite) The lift span was added in 1971 as part of the McClellan-Kerr navigation project.

(The original content concerning the coaling tower in Gilman, IL, has been moved to here.)

UP still runs major railyard facilities in North Little Rock just north of this bridge.

The bridge is 1,100' (335m) long and contains a 340' (104m) main span. [HistoricBridges]

"It remains one of the busiest railroad bridges in the country." [EncyclopediaOfArkansas] I wonder how often the span has to be lifted. That is, was the navigation project another USACE boondoggle?

tweet, I checked out the tweet link to get the date of Jun 1, 2019 when I noticed how high the river was running. This is another reminder that there was a lot of flooding in the US during 2019.
