1929: (Bridge Hunter; Historic Bridges; Satellite) The lift span was added in 1971 as part of the McClellan-Kerr navigation project.
UP still runs major railyard facilities in North Little Rock just north of this bridge.
The bridge is 1,100' (335m) long and contains a 340' (104m) main span. [HistoricBridges]
"It remains one of the busiest railroad bridges in the country." [EncyclopediaOfArkansas] I wonder how often the span has to be lifted. That is, was the navigation project another USACE boondoggle?

Photo taken by Bradley Widding via Bridge Hunter, License: Creative Commons Attribution-Share-Alike (CC BY-SA) tweet, I checked out the tweet link to get the date of Jun 1, 2019 when I noticed how high the river was running. This is another reminder that there was a lot of flooding in the US during 2019. |
