1914 1200' (366m) Marion County Trail/Monongahela RR Meredith Tunnel at Fairmont, WV, and Bridge over Monongahela River

West Portal: (Satellite)
East Portal: (Satellite)
South Trailhead: (Satellite) The Marion County Trail goes to, but not over the bridge.

Unfortunately, the state's link for the trail's web page doesn't work. You end up at the home page of the web site. Fortunately, the county's link for the trail does work.

The tunnel was built in 1914, and the trail was completed in 1993.

The Monongahela Railroad was a shortline jointly owned by Pennsy and Pittsburgh & Lake Erie (P&LE) to access the coal mines in the area. The P&LE was controlled by the NYC. Later, the B&O acquired a one-third ownership. [American-Rails]

Dave Kuntz Drone Photos posted four photos with the comment: "Tunnel under a town - the Monongahela Railway Meredith Tunnel in Fairmont WV.  Now part of the MCTrail; many motorists are unaware that they are even driving over it."

Dave Kuntz Drone Photos posted five photos with the comment: "The Monongahela Railway bridge by Pricketts Fort along the scenic Monongahela River in Fairmont, WV.  Due to the conditions of the ties I would not recommend walking it.  However the bridge in the background is now part of the Mon River Trail and provides a great view of this bridge."

The girder bridge was a B&O bridge. The tunnel is in the bottom half of this excerpt.
