"The Upper Sheffield Covered Bridge, built in 1999, carries Bridge Road over the Housatonic River. This bridge is replaces a historic bridge which was built in 1832 and destroyed by fire in 1994. It was designed to be as close to a reproduction of the historic original as modern engineering standards would allow. The bridge is now open to foot traffic only. Bridge #1 was the oldest covered bridge in Massachusetts and built in 1835 but a historical marker on site lists it as 1854. The bridge was repaired in 1974 and in 1981 was restored by legendary covered bridge builder Milton S. Graton. The bridge was closed to vehicular traffic for good in 1986 and was the victim of arson in 1994. This information was obtained from 'Covered Bridges of Massachusetts, a guide' by Andrew R. Holland, a very useful guide that has much more information than what has been stated here.
