Pennsy's Englewood Connection

The Blackhawk Railway Historical Society The PRR's Englewood Connecting Line was an elevated line that ran east and west on the south side of Chicago between 58th Street and 59th Street. It connected the PRR's 55th Street Yard at Stewart Avenue and their 59th Street Yard at Hoyne Avenue. I took this photograph standing on Peoria Street looking up, south and east.

The Blackhawk Railway Historical Society It also served two coal yards on either side of Halsted Street.

Note the horizontal line labeled EC in this 1916 Pennsy map. I think of it as a connection between the Panhandle route on the left and the original Pittsburght, Fort Wayne, and Chicago route on the right.

Further West, I did find three industries with sidings. This excerpt should be between 58th-59th and Ada-Aberdeen. I can't find any traces of these sidings today, but I did find an abandoned siding between Throop and Elizabeth:

This should be the same five blocks in a 1929 Englewood Quadrangle at 1:24,000 scale.

Here is a listing of the industries on the ECRR from the 1945 CT1000. Plenty of business to keep a local busy.

  1. An interesting link about a loop fan trip in 1939 on the PRR which left Union Station on the north side and returned on the south side, going by way of Logansport and Fort Wayne.

  2. The mid 50s thru early 70s we lived on 58th@winchester next to the tracks, there was a coal yard that was serviced by the rail line between wood and Honore the retaining wall is still there Riemer coal co, the trains would stop alongside our house to call in before entering the yard
