BNSF/Santa Fe Joliet Yard and the Greif Industry

(Satellite)

This yard is one of the few yards left in the Chicagoland area that supports carload freight for local industries.

Christopher T Redmon: One of the best sections of the Chillicothe subdivision.

That is a popular drone angle.

Yesterday's 105 shoving into Joliet Yard. Hooray for H1 leaders. 04-10-20
Dennis DeBruler A drone is about the only way to view that yard. It is easy to hear the action from the Gaylord Donnely Trail, but it is very hard to see anything because of the canal and tree lines.
Dennis DeBruler How does BNSF split the work between GM and Joliet Yards? Does GM handle a local to the Argonne area and Joliet supports a local to the industries south of Joliet?
Nick Hart Correct. Joliet also has a few locals out of their yard that handle business west/south of town. HOD locals handle Argonne, Union Oil in Lemont and a few other nearby industries.
Andy Puch Nick Hart don't forget Lockport.
Nick Hart Andy Puch Ah yes. The JOL local to Greif Plastics in Lockport.

Work at Greif. The Greif job heads west out the Joliet yard lead with BNSF 1409 (SD60M), BNSF 1464 (SD60M) in front. They then backtrack towards Lockport with HLCX 1070 (GP38-2) now in the lead east. Once they get to Greif they cut the two trailing units, and the HLCX works the industry track.

BNSF 3167, still in Santa Fe paint, works Greif in Lockport. Good to see her working local industry on home rails.

A pair of SD40-2’s take one of BNSF’s ‘Joliet locals’ (train Y-JOL202) based out of Joliet Yard. Seen here heading west out of town, and making their way towards Blodgett, Illinois to work INEOS Styrolution America LLC, DUPONT, Hoffman Transportation and various other industries a couple of miles to the southwest of town. The lead SD40-2, BNSF #1842 wears the BNSF H1 scheme while the trailing SD40-2, BNSF #1706 still wears its Burlington Northern green.

Not something you see everyday. A lone shoving platform (caboose) on the main as the power swaps cars. YJOL101 works Greif Industries in Lockport.

Dennis DeBruler: I'm surprised the doors aren't welded shut since it is a shoving platform.
