Mobile-Coatzacoalcos Rail Ferry

(Bridge Hunter, Satellite)

While researching a new bridge for Mobile, AL, I discovered a big ferry operation across the Gulf of Mexico.
The CG Railway ferries connect CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern, BNSF Railway, Canadian National Railway, and Alabama Gulf Coast Railway at Mobile, Alabama, with Ferrocarril del Sureste (Ferrosur) at Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, MexicoFleet consists of two double decked rail-ferries capable of carrying 115 railcars each.
These ships are:
M/V Bali Sea (Built 1982)
M/V Banda Sea (Built 1982)
Built 2000, US port moved to New Orleans in 2004, port returned to Mobile in 2006 post-Katrina

This photo is not consistent with the satellite image because the photo has grain bins, but the satellite has a steel mill. I did find confirmation that this dock is in Mexico: "MV Bali Sea rail ferry transferring rail cars in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz." Both Google and Bing have poor resolution of the tracks built on the upper deck.

  1. Thanks for this info. Update (thanking you in kind!), https://ajot.com/news/cg-railway-launches-new-rail-ferry the rail ferry service is upgraded. Today the president of Mexico presented the 135-railcar-capacity ferry which will be entering service soon, to substitute for the 115 one; another ship coming into service early 2022. Built in China.
