1929 Navajo and 1995 US-89A Bridges over Grand Canyon at Marble Canyon, AZ

For once, a DOT built a replacement bridge and kept the historic bridge as a trail bridge.

"As the only crossing of the Colorado River for some 600 miles, the Navajo Bridge has had a profound impact on the commerce and transportation of a rugged, remote and isolated part of Arizona. Its construction opened the state from the north, providing a valuable tourist route to Grand Canyon National Park and the rest of the state." [HAER_data]

The foreground bridge is US-89A, and the background bridge is the old Navajo Bridge.

The bridge is actually two slender deck truss arch spans of about 800 feet across Marble Canyon and over the Colorado River. The original was built in 1927-28 and the second nearly 70 years later.

Navajo Bridge in Arizona spans the Colorado River near Lees Ferry, offering stunning views of Marble Canyon. Comprised of two parallel bridges, one for vehicles and one for pedestrians, it provides a unique vantage point to admire the river's beauty and the surrounding red rock cliffs.

We passed under it.

We visited Navajo Bridge quite by accident (we were just taking a "scenic route" from Flagstaff to SLC.) We got an extra Easter egg when there were Condors nesting on the bridges.

  1. Wow. But: Is this now, with its almost twin design, more wow than Crooked River Canyon, or less?
