To the right of center in the background of the above view we see a "hump" in the bridge where it clears a navigation channel. I tried to capture that hump below, but it is still hard to tell how high it is.
The length of the main span is 230' (70m). The average daily traffic is just 4,700. [BridgeHunter]
But the average daily traffic is not the issue for this bridge. The traffic during a hurricane evacuation is the reason it was built. [aogroup]

| Abandoned World posted Did you know.. The longest bridge in North Carolina is the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge, which stretches 5.2 miles over the Croatan Sound in Manteo in Dare County. The bridge carries US 64 Bypass. It allows vehicle access from Roanoke Island to Mann’s Harbor. The Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge was opened in August of 2002 at a construction cost of $90 million.
