Locks #4, #5 & #6 (Twin Flight Locks) and Lock #7 on Welland Canal

These are Locks 4, 5, 6 and 7 of the Welland Canal.

We are looking upbound (South) on the Welland Canal and from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie. Lock 4 is the one nearest to us and Lock 7 is the one "on top of the mountain" near the center.

The Welland Canal Flight Locks are an engineering marvel.  I always have a sense of  accomplishment when I am able to capture it loaded with 4 vessels. Why not 5 or 6 since there are 3 upbound locks on the west side and 3 downbound locks on the east side of the canal?  This is because leaving an empty lock between ships allows for a smoother and faster flow of traffic. Instead of waiting for a lock to be completely filled or drained, the next ship can enter as soon as the previous one has cleared and the lock is in the appropriate water level for its direction of travel. This also conserves water.
Seen here upbound in Lock 6 is JOHN D LEITCH and in Lock 4 is SEA EAGLE II with her barge ST MARYS CEMENT II.  On the downbound side in Lock 6 is FEDERAL MICHIGAN and in Lock 4 ALGOMA NIAGARA.

While the Seaway Locks are shutdown, they are inspected, repaired and any worn parts are replaced. The locks usually reopen around the last week of March, allowing ships to resume travel between Lake Superior and other Great Lake.

Bill Bird posted some pictures about the triple locks being shut down because of an oil spill. He also had some pictures showing that Lake Ontario was higher than normal.

Arrived Sunday to find the Welland Canal closed. It had been that way since Saturday afternoon. Federal Cedar is stuck in Lock 5 East.
[I count four ships in the locks.]

The problem was an oil leak in the flight locks due to the malfunctioning of canal equipment. A boom was placed at the north end of Lock 4 east.

Workers test the water to make sure the spillage is contained.

Even when traffic resumed shortly after noon Sunday, Federal Cedar stayed put. Downbound ships used the west side of the locks meaning upbounders would have to wait. It wasn't until after supper that Federal Cedar would be underway.

Viking Octantis is approaching/entering lock 7 on May 1, 2022. These are just few pictures that I’ve taken that day. It was hard to pick a few.
[I believe the ship is entering Lock #6 from #5 and the photos was taken from #7. It was obviously taken with a long telephoto lens thus the length of the lock looks rather short.]

A few of you noted yesterday that a number of ships were in anchorage waiting to go upbound in the Welland Canal. The reason - CN Rail is doing maintenance on Bridge #6 closing the east side of the flight locks for a few days. The delays are continuing today as work is still in progress - will update later.

Ever wonder what it looks like when a lock is filling? 
We will raise 14m (46’) in this lock. The total lift of the eight canal locks is 99m (325’).
The locks are filled/emptied by gravity. There are no pumps.

She is the Happy Ranger and her cargo on this journey was containers. She soon was lowered and then motored off into the sunrise.......lovely event to begin my day!"
[Container ports on the Great Lakes is a rather recent development. I wonder which port this is headed to. Or will it off load the containers at multiple ports?]

Two interesting lockages in just a few days.
Wendy Vetter posted three photos with the comment: "Yeah, got to see the second lock gate coming thru lock 7 , very impressive, what a feat that must be, got to love those tugs. I was told they were spares, stored underwater by lock 2 if my memory serves me correctly."
Andrew Carr: Its also hooked up to an air compressor and gets purged out every few hours incase any water has been taken on.
Ryan Ransom: Lock gates are generally hollow and float to a degree as otherwise the load on the hinge pivots would be too great.
Frank Kar: The lock gates are stored at the drydock just south of the wall. They are flooded and submerged to help preserve them. When needed they are partially filled with compressed air to float them to transport. There is a special crane in the St. Lawrence/ Montreal area to lift them into place for a change. http://carlzboats.blogspot.com/.../gate-lifter-vms...

The Welland Canal was constructed to carry ships from Port Weller on Lake Ontario up over the escarpment to Port Colborne on Lake Erie. In fact this is the 4th canal because as ships got bigger,  they had to make bigger canals to accommodate them.  Locks 4, 5 and 6 in the current canal  are twin locks and are an impressive engineering feat.
Today John set up his tripod and was able to capture ISADORA "climbing the mountain" as well as OCTANTIS coming downbound. Be sure to watch OCTANTIS slide at the end to line herself up for her next maneuver!  This is 2 hours compacted into a little over 2 minutes so don't blink or you will miss the Go Train.

This crane( is called a Stiffleg Derick)is use to lift the stop logs into place just below lock 4 to keep the lock dry in the winter, so they can do some maintenance work in the lock. I’ve seen this derrick in use just once. The last 2 pictures were taken on March 21, 2018."

Ben Hardie: Great shots 🙂 Why does lock 7 have 2 sets of gates at each end? And what is the reasoning behind what looks to be unnecessarily complex, curved gates?
Frank Kar: Ben Hardie The curved gate were developed for use in ice. Ice can't get behind them so they don't jam up as easy. The double regular gates are a back up system. Should 1 set fail they are still able to control the water and move ships. There used to be an emergency gate south of lock 7 galled the "guard gate" but was removed to speed up movement when the double gates at lock 7 were finished. The section of canal between lock 8 and 7 is full year round because it supplies water to many industries and the drinking water for St Satharines, Thorold area.

Winter 2025:
Bill Salton posted two photos with the comment: "Pretty common sight for us locals, but those not used to seeing the Welland Canal out of season may be interested to see how much of the lock is hidden even at low pool. For reference, ships can be at maximum of 26 feet of draught in the canal, and there is usually a few additional feet below that. The zoomed in photo shows more clearly where the water level usually sits."
Russell McGrath: We drain them every year excavators are sent in by crane and work the bottom of locks clearing debris loaded up into bins and hauled out by crane to acting trucks. Workers also inspect locks for damage and scaffold is erect to make repairs to sides and doors

The little boat allows us to see the sill under the gate between Locks #4 and #5. Of course, the big boat is in Lock #6.

I love seeing a BIG commercial vessels with a much smaller boats. Today let's see those odd pairings of size discrepancies.  This is one of my favorite and shows Algotitan upbound in the Flight Locks with Debra Huslage and her family on their pleasure craft waiting to enter Lock 4.

BREAKING NEWS March 30 - 9am - WELLAND CANAL CLOSED DUE TO TRAIN DERAILMENT - SHIPS TYING UP AT EITHER END
A train derailed in St. Catharines, Ont., East of Glendale Avenue this morning, at Lock 4. Preliminary reports indicate that several cars are derailed; no injuries or fires have been reported. A non-dangerous good called polyethylene, a product used in the manufacturing of household plastics, has spilled from one of the cars. There is no danger to the public. CN crews and local responders are on-site

The Welland Canal is closed at this time - ALGONOVA is tied up at 7, CSL ST. LAURENT at Lock 1, ALGOTITAN coming in from Lake Ontario.

[According to some comments, they disconnected the train from the derailed cars and pulled it off the bridge. That opened the Seaway back up. I guess it took a few hours to inspect the tracks to OK moving the train.]

1871+1875+1876+1901+1984 BNSF/NP Bridges over Mississippi River in Brainerd, MN


I was surprised that the Mississippi River was this wide so far north in Minnesota.

Either this is the 1871 bridge that collapsed later that year or it is the 1871 bridge with new 1875 spans because the bridge collapsed in 1871. Note that this bridge appears to be made with wood.

NLMK/Beta Steel in Portage, IN

While studying the Sharon Steel Corp. in Pennsylvania that is now owned by the Russian company NLMK, I learned that the Russians also own this plant in Indiana. Then the next day I came across this post that referenced it. So this topic tripped my "twice in a couple of days" rule.

"NLMK Indiana operates an electric arc furnace, a ladle metallurgy furnace, a continuous slab caster and converts slabs into coils in its hot strip mill. NLMK Indiana is a prime supplier of hot rolled and hot rolled pickle & oil products. NLMK Indiana offers both EAF and integrated melted products, ranging from 1006 through 1095 grades, HSLA grades and various alloy grades. The facility is strategically located in the Port of Indiana on the shores of Lake Michigan, enabling barge shipment as well as truck and rail. The major markets we service are pipe and tube, energy, agriculture, construction, automotive and service centers." [NLMK-Indiana] I think the "integrated melted products" are provided by importing the slabs from Russia. I wonder if  salties dock here.

1910-1983 Aban/Pennsy Concrete Arch Overpasses in Cambridge City, IN

I normally don't note overpass bridges unless they are over an Interstate with lots of lanes. But I can't remember seeing a concrete arch used for an overpass.

The Pennsylvania Railroad once crossed over Foote St., in Cambridge City, Indiana. This line was abandoned in 1983.
Matthew Lappin: They tore this down in early 2000s as it literally cut this town in half.

Finnerty: I have seen on the Google map and looked at it on street level, that the former Pennsylvania railroad line from Richmond Indiana, to Indianapolis Indiana was elevated in 4 different locations that I have seen so far, it was elevated in cambridge city, Lewisville Indiana, raysville Indiana and knightstown Indiana. There might be other locations.
Phillip A. Finnerty: I heard from some one that they had a hard time back then taking other bridges down in cambridge city Indiana and just gave up and left the other bridges on Foote street and another street east of foote street alone.
Ethan McDowell: Cambridge City used to be all concrete arch. Over the decades it was torn down to make more room to grow.
The PRR was at least double tracked along most of its route.
Mark Backhaus: This was an earth filled bridge. The fill inside the bridge was probably partially removed when the fill was removed beyond the bridge to prevent it from collapsing off the end of the bridge.

Bruce Bridges: This picture gives you a very good idea of how these concrete arches are put together! It's basically a one piece poured structure with the dirt built up around it.

Looking at a topo map, it becomes clear that Pennsy elevated their tracks through town to reduce the size of the cuts needed through the hill west of Walnut St. and the hill between the two river valleys on the east side of town.

I haven't seen concrete overpasses because I don't live in the right area. I'm reminded that Pennsy liked arch bridges. They started with masonry bridges. For example, the Rockville Bridge. Given that culture, it is not surprising that most Pennsy overpasses in this city were built with a concrete arch. (Meredith Street may have used steel girders.)

The builder of these overpasses in Cambridge City, P.F. Brendlinger, was evidently using precast segments rather than casting-in-place. The wood structure in the photo below is not forms for reinforced concrete, but falsework to hold the segments in place until the arch is complete. So Brendlinger was using masonry techniques with "big stones" made with concrete.

This view better shows the retaining wall that they added so that they could remove the remaining embankment dirt.

So it is now rather obvious that the city removed the overpasses from Walnut, Jones and Green Streets, but that they gave up when they got to Foote Street except for Plum Street. That arch was narrow enough that they did remove it.

Since the arches were built with "big stones" instead of reinforced concrete, they should not have been that hard to take down. So why did they stop at Foote Street? The topo map helps answer that question as well. The depot was obviously built on an embankment just east of Foote Street.

In fact, parts of the retaining wall used to construct the depot's embankment are still peaking through the vegetation. Look in the upper-right corner of this excerpt.

Rich Karding's post taught me about this CN sale to Watco. A comment on the post provided the FOXY reporting mark for the new railroad, Fox Valley & Lake Superior Rail System, created by Watco to operate these assets. Several of the comments give insight about which customers CN was unable to drive off of their branch lines by providing bad service. The red+blue lines for joint operation must not show up properly on the map because I could not find any. And because FOXY surely has connections between its various blue segments. Of note, WSOR is also a Watco railroad.

I was surprised that the map did not show a route to Chicago. I'm sure that CN does not use WSOR to gain access to Chicago. So I found a CN map to show a more complete network. A capacity map is useful because it effectively documents the routes that CN cares about, i.e. the green lines. I wonder if the route to Canada via Sault ste Marie is a lightweight route by today's standards because of the several bridges needed to cross the shipping channels and St. Marys River. Otherwise, I would think that CN would care about that route.
