C&NW and Milwaukee Road Tracks at Western Avenue in 1905

Jeff Davis posted
This is facing east and you can see all the crossovers allowing the Milwaukee Road to branch off to the north.

This is a reminder that Chicago forced the railroads to separate the grade between their tracks and the roads. You can see a crane in the background laying stone for the new embankment on the north side. There already is part of a stone embankment wall in the foreground on the south. Also note the watchtowers at each crossing for the manual control of the crossing gates.

The picture also shows how heavily industrialized the area was with almost every building pouring out smoke. In the background with the hi-res version, in the smog, you can faintly see the "L" bridge that is now just the world's heaviest-duty signal bridge (satellite).

Neal Korn Not that there was any doubt, but that building on Oakley still has Salter Mfg Co visible on the south wall.
