Just yet another Illinois Department of Transportation steel girder bridge. The main reason I took this picture was to note the amount of debris that can pile up against a pier. Can you imagine how much debris could pile up against a dam? That is why designing Tainter gates so that they can go down and the debris can flow over them is important for some rivers.
