After building an extension from Kansas City to Chicago in 1888,
the Santa Fe went from Chicago to southern California. At
Barstow, CA, the route forked and one leg went south to the Los Angles+Long Beach area and the other leg continued up the center of California and then curved west to terminate on the west side of the San Francisco Bay. They had their own ferry service to deliver cars to industries on the east side of the bay.
