This is an Erie Railroad accident investigation photo for a grade crossing accident, which occurred at the 165th St crossing in Hammond, on May 1, 1950. From the photo and caption, it appears that a car ignored the crossing signals and while crossing (direction unknown), was struck by C&O #94, a Eastbound freight and shoved through the EB street crossing signal. 'HY Tower' is visible to the right of the tracks, in the background.
While it shows some folks working around the downed crossing signal, it doesn't appear that Signal Gang #33 has shown up yet.
Justin Gillespie Today you’d be looking at an elementary school.Michael Dye With apartments sitting on the Erie's Yard and a Social Security office sitting where the yard offices were (Until they were torn down in JUL72 [Sadly, I have photos of that demolition]). |
In 1974 Tom Golden caught four Erie E8(A)s pulling a s/b mixed freight.
The Erie and C&O each owned a track west of Griffith, but it was controlled and maintained by the Erie. [C&O had the eastern track.] The C&O actually ended at HY, and trains continued to Rockwell. IIRC from what I was told and read, a couple trains went directly to the NKP or the Belt for forwarding, since the C&O didn't maintain a large presence in Chicago.
Same from the PM standpoint, just alot of handing off.

Comments on a post of a 1911 C&O timetable:
Tim Sasse Wasn't HY Tower where the original route - the Hammond Belt branched to the west and then to the north to join the IHB at Louisville Jct and then onto the IC at Woodlawn?
Bob Lalich Yes Tim Sasse, except the IC junction was called Highlawn.
