Update: OK, this gives me a clue as to how these ropes can be used. But I do wish I could see a picture of what those hooks are attached to and what they would lift.

Here is another example of something big enough to need big steel ropes --- a ring crane.

Where did that big piece of metal come from that they crimped on the end of the splice?
