OH-715 is in the flood plain of the Mohawk Dam. Obviously, the dam is a flood control dam and the reservoir is normally empty. When I accessed this map on May 29, 2026, the road was closed because the reservoir was retaining water. Today's US-36 south of here must have been built when the dam was built.

Dobbins posted these photos on May 26, 2026. Note that the new bridge is also under water. Note the log on top of the truss. Some comments on the post indicated that happened during 2019.

I guess the embankment on the right is the emergency spillway. It is the original undisturbed earth. That is, it is not dirt piled up in layers like the dam itself is.

Both thought they could make it earlier this week with lower water levels. Neither did. Turn Around, Don't Drown.
The red dot is a Cadillac. The yellow dot is Ford truck. Neither can be seen at this time.

1951 Delaware Dam on the Olentangy River North of Columbus, OH

"The dam is 3.5 miles [5.6km] long and 92 feet [28m] high, and controls a drainage area of 386 square miles through the use of five gated sluices and six 25-foot by 32-foot tainter[Parker]/radial gates."

I was surprised by the length of the dam, so I took a closer look at a satellite image. The part that went east of the spillway to Horseshoe Road was obvious. Then I noticed that the western part goes North along US-23 and then turns west up by Wiley Road

In fact, US-23 appears to be an emergency spillway.

There are campgrounds in the floodplain. So I hope they do a good job of getting the campers evacuated before the grounds become flooded.

Three gates is the max flow I saw looking at Google Earth images. When the flow is smaller, we can see the wall for the stilling basin.

1968 Eagle Creek Dam in Indianapolis, IN

A little history about the name of our beautiful Spellacy Covered Bridge 
Spellacy Bridge
The mystery of the name Spellacy had hopes of being a romantic story of a long gone family that lived in the area. A story filled with blood, sweat and tears soaking the soil in the efforts to keep the family and farm thriving.  A story that would lead us to generations of family members that broke ground, fell trees and became a vital part of the areas history. 
But in actuality…….the name arrived in the form of Matthew Spellacy, a railroad contractor, born in 1843 in Ireland who got the contract for that section of the railroad track. 
According to his obituary, Mr Spellacy, who died in  September 1912 at 67 years of age, was a well-known contractor, director and large stockholder of the Driving Park Association, died at his home in Alton Ohio. During his life in Franklin County he managed some of the most important contracting work in the country.  He built the Norfolk and Western, worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad and built the Toledo and Ohio Central Belt Line.  He accumulated much wealth and gave generously to many charities and to individuals among the poor.

1940 Fort Peck Dam Danger

The earthen dam suffered two landslides during construction. The first one happened early with a designed slope of 1:1. The slope was changed to 1:3, and construction continued. The second happened near completion because the weak shale bedrock failed. They convened the design committee, and they concluded that the dam should be fixed and completed. These screenshots are of the second landslide.

The power plant is on the left. I don't know why the buildings are so tall. If they are surge tanks, they are awful big.

The consulted expert blames the big landslide during construction on the use of hydraulic fill rather than on the shale that deteriorated when exposed to weather. Thus, he says the dam could fail again. If Fort Peck Dam breaks, the deluge of water could break the big downstream dams. This would flood St. Louis with a lot more water than the 1993 flood.

Although The Fort Peck Dam in Montana: It is the largest hydraulically filled dam in the United States and creates Fort Peck Lake, the fifth largest artificial lake in the U.S. The dam is over 250 feet [76m] in height and 21,026 feet [6.4km, 4 miles] in length. What’s more, the dam was constructed not only for flood control but also to create jobs during the Great Depression. At its peak in 1936, it provided 10,456 jobs. Isn’t that fascinating?"

Fort Peck Dam
Fort Peck Dam is one of the largest earth-fill dams in the world, located in northeastern Montana on the Missouri River. Built during the Great Depression, it stands as a landmark of American engineering and New Deal–era public works.
Construction and History
Construction began in 1933 and was completed in 1940 as part of large federal projects designed to create jobs and modernize infrastructure. Thousands of workers came to the remote plains to build the massive structure, turning the project into a major historical chapter for the region.
At the time, it was among the biggest dam projects ever attempted in the U.S.
Size and Engineering
Fort Peck Dam is over 21,000 feet (6,400 m) long and about 250 feet (76 m) high. Unlike concrete dams, it is made primarily of compacted earth and rock, which required enormous volumes of material and careful design.
Fort Peck Lake
The dam created Fort Peck Lake, one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States. The lake stretches for more than 130 miles and has a shoreline longer than California’s coast.
Purpose
Fort Peck Dam serves multiple roles:
Hydroelectric power generation
Flood control along the Missouri River
Water storage and river management
Recreation and tourism
Recreation and Wildlife
The area around the lake is known for outdoor activities such as:
Fishing for walleye, pike, and bass
Boating and camping
Wildlife watching
It is managed in part by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which oversees dam operations and recreation areas.
Why It Matters
Fort Peck Dam is both an engineering achievement and a historical symbol of the New Deal era. Today it continues to provide power, manage water, and support recreation in the northern Great Plains.

It was a crisp autumn day on October 10, 1936, at the massive construction site of Fort Peck Dam in northeastern Montana. Dozens of workers swarmed over the enormous circular steel liner — a giant diversion tunnel section designed so that one-fourth of the mighty Missouri River would eventually flow through it during the dam’s construction. Men in work clothes and caps balanced on scaffolding and internal spokes, welding, bolting, and guiding the massive structure into place with ropes and tools. The huge steel cylinder dominated the scene, dwarfing the workers and highlighting the incredible scale of this New Deal engineering project. Built to tame the Missouri River, provide jobs during the Great Depression, and bring flood control and navigation to the region, Fort Peck Dam was one of the largest earth-filled dams in the world. This iconic photograph by Margaret Bourke-White captured both the raw power of American industry and the human effort behind it.

1931 Echo Dam on Weber River near Coalville, UT

A closer look beneath the surface at Echo Dam:
What started as a routine day became a major discovery when a dam tender spotted unusual conditions earlier this year. After water levels were lowered, crews found large concrete slabs had been lifted and shifted by powerful flows from the spillway and outlet works into the stilling basin.
The Bureau of Reclamation and partners, including the Weber River Water Users Association, quickly investigated and determined the slabs were not fully anchored and had been displaced over time. Crews installed nearly 90 deep anchors, each about 30 feet long, to secure new concrete and improve long-term performance.
Repairs were completed ahead of schedule, helping ensure the dam remains safe, reliable and ready for future high-water events.
Rick Kuter: Let's hope the future includes some high-water events. Definitely not a problem with this winter's snowpack, or lack thereof.

"Echo Dam is a zoned earthfill structure, one mile upstream from the town of Echo and about six miles north of Coalville. It has a structural height of 158 feet [48m] and contains 1,540,000 cubic yards of materials. The spillway has a capacity of 15,000 cubic feet per second. The outlet conduit is a concrete-lined horseshoe tunnel to the gatehouse, from which two steel pipes pass through a tunnel to the valve house. The outlet works has a capacity of 2,100 cubic feet per second."
