Abandoned in Virginia posted three photos with the comment: "The old New River bridge that was burned down during the Civil War. New bridge built right next to where the old stone pillars still stand!"
Jessica Johnson-Whitaker: This is not actually true - the pillars from tbt old bridge that was burned was used to build the one they use now. The other pillars are the remains of another trestle project Norfolk Southern was trying to build but abandoned it.

Museum/Pocahontas Coal Mine and 1883 Aban/N&W #1, #2 & #3Tunnels near Pocahontas, VA

Pocahontas was a company town for the adjacent mine, and the tunnels are on the 4.5-mile branch that N&W built to serve the coal mines.
The tunnels were built in 1883 and Tunnel #2 was reinforced with concrete in 1915. [AbandonedOnline (This web page has a map of the three tunnels.)]

"The Southwest Virginia Improvement Company opened Pocahontas Mine No. 1, the first to exploit the rich seams of the Pocahontas Coalfield, in 1882. An extension of the Norfolk and Western Railway soon followed, bringing industrial development to Southwest Virginia and linking it to Norfolk. The mine brought a mix of ethnic groups from neighboring states and Europe to the area, including African Americans, Hungarians, Italians, Russians, Germans, and Welsh. Miners produced about 1,000 tons of coal a day by 1883 In 1938, a closed section of the mine opened as the nation’s first Exhibition Coal Mine, which educated visitors about the industry. Mining operations ceased in 1955." [hmdb]

The Pocahontas Branch, located near Pocahontas, Virginia, is a defunct 4.5-mile coal-hauling rail line that spans approximately 4½ miles. The branch includes the Pocahontas No. 1 and No. 2 Tunnel (the third and fourth tunnels before part of the branch line became the main line), which were constructed in 1883. One of the last coal preparation plants on the line closed in 1974. While plans were to utilize the abandoned line for tourist train purposes, it never materialized.
"The Pocahontas Branch served only four coal operations, split evenly between the Pocahontas Fuel Company and Pocahontas Big Vein Coal Company. 2 Pocahontas Fuel operated its original No. 1 mine in Pocahontas until October 13, 1955. 1 2 During its reign of 73 years, it produced more than 44 million tons of coal. The preparation plant in Boissevain operated until the early 1970s, while another facility in Pocahontas was open until 1974. The rail line was mothballed afterward, preserved in the event another mine would be developed in the vicinity."

This source says the tunnel was only 37' (11.3m) long. There were 22 bridges on the N&W branch along the Laurel Creek.

Steven Myers: They pulled the standard gage rails and left the guardrails. Tie plates still spiked to ties at standard gage width.

A long US 22 between Casiz and Hopedale, Ohio, you'll see a closed off tunnel on the right side of the road(pictured here) always been curious of what the tunnel was for. Any information?
Thomas Kinney: The railroad track directly to the right used to go through it, but there were geologic instabilities, so they bypassed the tunnel and blocked it up. Fun Fact: I am actually on US 22, and just passed over the tunnel as I am writing this! [He explained in another comment that he was a passenger.]

They closed the tunnel and rerouted the line due to the tunnel having structural issues
Wm Pedly: Fun fact, President Lincoln passed through that tunnel on his bid for the presidency. He stopped in some small town nearby and talked to the residents. A buddy and I climbed the dirt pile used to close it off, and went through a hole in the top where the stacks would blow the coal smoke. inside you wouldn't believe the bats and the daddy long leg spiders. Still in incredible shape with old brick work and stone work. Very wet and somewhat dangerous and tricky to get to. Great piece of history.
Geoff Elliott: The tunnel was open when I was young. Don't think it was closed up until the 1990s.

I couldn't find the tunnel until it occurred to me that it must have been daylighted by the time this map was made. Then I read the above comments that confirmed that they dug a cut to bypass the tunnel.
I have never heard of the Pittsburgh & West Virginia Railroad. It was merged into the N&W in 1964. [Dennis DeBruler]

No kidding about yielding to traffic that is already in the tunnel. I guess, since the tunnel is straight, you can see if a vehicle is already coming to you. I'd be sure to turn on my headlights even though the tunnel is well lit so others could see that I'm in the tunnel. In fact, when I checked out the sign on the left, it reads "CHECK HEADLIGHTS."

"The first bridge at this location was built by the Scioto Valley Railroad (SVR) between 1875 and 1877 and was ready for track laying on September 10, 1877. Boatloads of iron for its construction were delivered via the Ohio & Erie Canal." [B&T]

115 years later, this Norfolk Southern bridge still stands strong.
The Columbus District line crosses Paint Creek in Chillicothe, Ohio, on a four-span Warren through truss bridge completed around 1910. It replaced an earlier structure built by the Scioto Valley Railroad in 1877.

"About 300 feet long, this one spans the canal and the towpath at Lock 13, and is about 40 feet above the top of the lock. It is the second trestle built on the site. The first was the crude-looking wooden structure seen in 19th-century photographs of the valley. According to Ohio railroad icon, author, and history professor Dr. Roger Grant, the wooden trestle was constructed by the Valley Line Railroad in 1879-80. This line went bankrupt in 1895, but was reorganized as the Cleveland Terminal & Valley Company, the same year. The Baltimore  & Ohio took control of the line in 1909.  It is this trestle that is crossed by today’s Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, from which riders can get an aerial view of the Cascade Locks."

"A second, much higher trestle soars 70 feet above Lock 11. Erected in 1926 by the American Bridge Company, the lofty steel structure soars 70 feet above Lock 11 and is nearly 900 feet long. It is a thrill to watch a massive, thousand-ton freight train serenely gliding  eight stories in the air over the fragile-looking steel structure—a marvel of then-relatively-new structural engineering design; i.e., the ability to daringly calculate the strength of materials (as first demonstrated by such 19th century pioneers as James B. Eads and John Roebling, who left St. Louis’s Eads Bridge, New York’s Brooklyn Bridge, and Cincinnati’s Great Suspension Bridge in their wake). Beneath this light steel webbing , still standing  like ancient monuments, are the massive stone piers that supported the first trestle on this sight, erected in 1890-91 by the Pittsburgh, Akron & Western Railroad."
