Tim M. Hickernell shared Repost from Forgotten Chicago. A lot of Chicago railroad history in here, including old NW Station, old Union Station and the original B&OCT river bridge. John Bona And....not to be forgotten..... The Illinois Central along the lakefrontPaul Petraitis The IC defined the eastern edge of Chicago for 100 years!Dennis DeBruler The Van Buren Street Bridge looks like it has a bascule bridge leaf in the raised position, and it does not have a swing bridge pier. Chicago River Bridges confirms it was the first bascule bridge, and it was built in 1894. So the map is more recent than 1894, but I don't think it is much older. http://chicagoloopbridges.com/bridges12/SB12/VB12-1.html |
These are notes that I am writing to help me learn our industrial history. They are my best understanding, but that does not mean they are a correct understanding.
