Federal Inspection Train Derails on Long Island Railroad (LIRR) Tracks

(Satellite)

May 2023 has been a bad month for commuter trains because of derailments by federal trains. Amtrak problems have impacted Metra trains in Chicago, and now (May 11, 2023), a FRA inspection train derailed on Long Island. As several comments on Facebook posts have said, the inspection train did find at least one problem.

Robert Prez: Now it is time for MTA to play its favorite game: "Passing the Blame". That Engineer better have their rule book and proper procedure memorized for when TA wants to make them the scapegoat.
Joe Zacconi: Robert Prez A number of years ago , an engine derailed in GCT. When the MTA (MTA---More Trouble Ahead) officials arrived in the tower to "help", one official was pacing the floor waving her arms like the propellers on a B-25 saying over and over "Who can we blame for this?"
Ricardo Scott: So let me get this straight the ENGINE didn't derail but the FRA Inspection Car....derailed! I'm going by the picture I see. Was it high speed or restricted speed, over a problem area. There are many factors to all situations. A full disclosure of all situations is hardly ever given. But it's left up to the listener or reader to add their own interpretation to all situations. Believe what you see and try to understand what you might hear!!!!

Fortunately, this derailment impacted just the last stop, Long Island City, on a short branch.

CBS news correctly reported it as a "non-passenger train," but ABC news reported it as an Amtrak train.
