The Marine Buff posted The Sart Canal Bridge, completed in 2002, is an impressive 498-meter-long structure located in Belgium. It carries the Canal du Centre over the Thiriau du Sart valley, spanning over a major road intersection at N55 and N535. This post-tensioned concrete bridge, which uses a unique U-shaped girder design, supports around 80,000 tons of water and allows vessels to cross the valley without locks. It was built using the incremental launching method, with a total construction cost of approximately €29 million. The bridge, standing 131 feet high and supported by 18 piers, is a key element of Belgium’s waterway network, linking the Meuse and Scheldt rivers, facilitating both commercial and tourist traffic. |
