Aban/NYC and 1951 US-60 Bridges over Gauley River in Gauley Bridge, WV

NYC: (Archived Bridge Hunter; Bridge Hunter; Historic Bridges; Satellite)

The Gauley River joins the New River to form the Kanawha River.

Note the abandoned piers on this side of the railroad bridge.

Those piers have been repurposed as a suspension bridge for a pipe.

Normally, I would not note a steel-girder bridge, but Historic Bridges considered it worthy of inclusion. 1951 is probably an early date for steel-girder bridges.

Originally, this bridge connected NYC with C&O.

When Conrail was split up, CSX got the bridge. Of course, CSX would have no desire to interchange with NS here. But a couple of Waldo's photos shows that rails are still on the bridge. Is CSX keeping this bridge intact in case they need an emergency detour? Looking at the satellite image, the C&O branch along the Gauley River doesn't look like it is used much. But if that is the case, why did they build a 2011 replacement bridge at Gauley?

Also, CSX has a connection with NS just downstream on the Kanawha River at the Deep Water Bridge.
