At the south end of NKP's
passenger line and just north of
Pullman Junction was the NKP's Stony Island Shops and Passenger Yard.
NKP's Calumet Yard that was south of Pullman Junction gradually made this yard obsolete. So they sold the facility to
Verson Allsteel Press. Now, it is the new home for
Finkl Steel.

Verson bought the main shop building seen in the map from the NKP after the latter built new engine servicing facilities at Calumet Yard in the early 50s. |

Bob Lalich has explained in some Facebook comments that NKP expanded their
Calumet Yard with a new engine terminal and passenger tracks in a 1952/53 rebuild. They then sold the Stony Island facility to
Verson Allsteel Press. Verson kept the main shop building. In 2006
A. Finkl Steel bought this facility and moved their operation from the north side of Chicago because of its gentrification. A remnant of the passenger line remains as an industrial spur for this facility. These former NKP assets are now owned by Norfolk Southern.
I lived at 9118 Blackstone in Chicago in the 40's & 50's. I remember going into the NKP Roundhouse with a Milk Man delivering milk to the workers on a couple of Saturday's. The Milk Man had a horse pulled delivery cart. The horse's name was Jenny. She knew where to stop in the neighborhood unless people moved. We would bum pennies off the Roundhouse workers for a candy or gum ball machine there. lots of Railroad workers in our neighborhood. I saw wrenches so big it would take two men to use them. Those were good days. Even during WWII the troop trains would stop and let the Men get off to march thru the neighborhood for exercise. We would beg for souvenirs.
