1932,1962+2018 US-60+KY-80 Bridges over Lake Barkley (Cumberland River)

1932+1944: (Bridge Hunter; Historic Bridges; B&T)
2018: (B&T; Satellite)

The truss bridge was closed during 1962-63 to raise the bridge 10' to provide clearance for Lake Barkley. [B&T-1932]

I saved a satellite image because it is remarkably old. It doesn't show any signs of the new construction. In other words, it is a "before" image. Eventually, we will see an "after" image.

I extensively documented the bridge replacement of the similar US-60+KY-80 Eggner Ferry Bridge, so I'm including just some closeups of the construction in this posting.

Mike Keith posted four pictures with the comment: "68/80 Barkley Lake Bridge Just a few weeks till we float the center span in."

Lake Barkley is a 50,000 acre lake that encompasses land in Livingston, Trigg, and Lyon counties in Kentucky along with Houston and Stewart counties in Tennessee. It is another large man-made lake just to the east of Kentucky Lake. It was created in 1966 with the completion of Barkley Dam, impounding the Cumberland River. This lake is 134 miles long with around 1,004 miles of shoreline. Like Kentucky Lake, the creation of Lake Barkley led to several towns being flooded including Old Kuttawa and Old Eddyville in Kentucky, with the “Old” name referring to the areas of the towns that were left underwater once Barkley Dam was completed. These “Old” areas can be seen when water levels are low. Present day Eddyville and Kuttawa were formed after the creation of the lake. This lake is named after Vice President and US Senator Alben Barkley of Paducah, KY.
