VDOT posted on May 31, 2017 EXTENDED OPENING OF BERKLEY BRIDGE SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 1ST Motorists are urged to plan their travel accordingly. SUFFOLK-The United States Coast Guard has requested the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) open the Berkley Bridge for an extended period of time beginning at approximately 2 p.m. on June 1, 2017. The scheduled bridge opening will accommodate the safe transit of a 600-foot long, 140-foot wide floating dry dock which is bound for Colonna’s Shipyard in Norfolk. This extended opening will last for approximately 30 minutes or longer. Motorists in the cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth can expect delays as several tug boats will steer the floating vessel along the Elizabeth River. The single-track 1908 bridge on the east side is no longer used, and it is always in the upright position.

Andrew Callo posted NS bridges 5 (left) and 5A (right). #5 is in regular use. #5A is out of service. I remember around 1980 or ‘82, #5A was briefly reopened when maintenance was being done on #5. Does anyone know future status of #5A, if any? Raiford Wilson: Supposedly 5A is a match for Bridge 7. In the event of Bridge 7 being damaged beyond repair, 5A could be taken down and floated to replace Bridge 7. If that’s actually the case, 5A’s future status is to maintain status quo. Patrick Suttle: Bridges 5 and 5A were BOTH installed by the N&W. The 5A was used for the passenger main years ago. I believe the eastern branch bridge is on the ex VGN. |
Campostella Road
This bridge is high enough that barge traffic can pass under it. This fixed bridge replaced a trunnion bridge, which replaced a swing bridge.
