| Missouri's Historic Highways posted March 21, 1928 – The bridge carrying MO 42 over the Current River at Doniphan opened, replacing a span that had been constructed in 1898. The new bridge was said to be the longest in the state at the time, with the exception of the Missouri River Bridges. The first car, "loaded with a bunch of high school girls," was driven by Miss Alma Fritsch of Doniphan. State Route 42 was re-designated State Route 14 in the 1940s and, in 1954, was again re-designated as U.S. Route 160. The bridge was replaced in 1991. Tom Beckett: Drove over this bridge many times. I remember if you looked over the side you could see part of the previous bridge laying in the river. |
Comparing this topo with a current satellite image indicates the new bridge was built close to the alignment of the truss bridge.
