Karen Limardi posted 22 photos with the comment: "Tomorrow [Mar 10, 2024] the Welland Canal will begin filling up in preparation for the opening of the canal on March 22 for shipping season. I had the opportunity to explore the drained weir pond and ruins of Locks 21 and 22 of the old Third Canal this past week. The area is just east of the twin flight locks in Thorold."
PD Cappola: How long to fill? Does it fill from Lake Ontario or Erie?
Karen Limardi: PD Cappola I heard it's a slow process...lock to lock...starting at Lock 1...which kinda defeats gravity as Lake Ontario is lower...I'm going to take a ride out there tomorrow. Really though the canal is only drained from Lock 1 to Lock 7 in Thorold. The section between Port Colborne to Thorold doesn't get drained at all.
