It's another birthday today with Lock and Dam 21 in Quincy, Illinois, turning 88 years young! Construction began on the lock structure on December 11, 1933, with the entire system placed in operation on this date [July 23] in 1938. Interesting fact: Due to to a lack of funding at the time, the lock was completed one year before construction of the dam began. |
