Ohio Street Bridges over Buffalo River in Buffalo, NY

There is a reason why Buffalo is called silo city. In this street view, the headhouse of the Standard elevator is to the left of the bridge, the Cargill Electric elevator is behind the bridge and LaFarge (Huron Cement) is to the right of the bridge. [DeBruler]

This lift bridge is "tower driven." That means that the machinery to move the cables are located in "houses" on top of the towers. [buffaloah] Most lift bridges, like the Michigan Avenue Bridge that is the nest one downriver, have the lift machinery in a "house" on top of the span. I wonder how they synchronize the lift rates with the tower driven design. In a span driven design, the lift rates are naturally synchronized because everything is geared to one electrical motor.

International Harvester once owned two lake freighters, The International and The Harvester, which served its Wisconsin Steel Works on the Calumet River in South Chicago. Like most private Great Lakes fleets, IH's took on spot cargoes at times to keep their vessels running loaded. Here we see the Str. The Harvester carrying a grain cargo to Buffalo.

While researching LaFarge, I encountered a view where the bridge was closed in Sep 2014. I wonder why, and for how long, it was closed. And it closed again in May 2021 for a $15m rehab project that is expected to last until summer 2022. [wgrz]

Janey wants it rough & ready for Thursday so here you go. A series of shots of the Leudtke gang moving mud in the Buffalo River. It doesn't get any dirtier than this. They dredge up there every 2 years to remove all the silt that comes down in the Spring. The navigation channel is 22 feet deep but it can fill right up in certain places in a matter of a few months if there's heavy rain & lots of flow.

They pump it into the Stoney Point CDF (Containment Disposal Facility) for now. They did a massive environmental clean up of the river a few years ago. The ultimate goal is to just drop it in the lake but it has to be tested & so far the tests aren't coming back clean enough yet.

Brian R. Wroblewski: [The crane] uses the bucket to "steer" the empty exactly where he wants it by basically dragging the scow around with it.
They even use the bucket to move the derrick boat around when the tug isn't there. He'l drop a spud & use the bucket to maneuver the barge around it or drop the bucket & grab the bottom & pull the barge towards it by reeling in the cable.

Launched into service Sept. 24 1952 by Defoe Shipbuilding, Bay City Mich. Original name “Charles L. Hutchinson” from 1952-1962. Purchased by the Ford Motor Co. in 1962 and renamed the “Ernest R. Breech.” Sailed as the Breech until 1988. In 1988 it was sold to Minch Transit C. of Cleveland.(Kinsman Lines) and named “Kinsman Independent.” Operated under that name until 2005.
Purchased by Voyageur Marine Transports in 2005 and named “Voyageur Independent” until 2008 when it was acquired by Lower Lakes Towing LTD. From 2008 - 2022 sailing as the “Ojibway.”
TUG “KINSALE”
The Kinsale was originally built in 1939 as the "J. Raymond Russell" for the Newtown Creek Towing Company of New York. It was sold to McAllister Towing & Transportation of New York, in 1961, and renamed "Muriel McAllister" in 1963. She was sold to the Gaelic Tugboat Company of Detroit, in 1975 and renamed "Kinsale." The Kinsale was sold in 1991 to American Tugboat Company Inc. and departed the Great Lakes. It was eventually abandoned at Jacksonville, Florida, and was cut up for scrap in 2008.
Jerry M Malloy: I remember the captain and/or one of the crew members of the tug Kinsale, only spoke Polish, and was thrilled when he came to the Harbor Inn and could converse freely with my parents who both were of Polish ancestry and spoke Polish fluently.

This Brown Bascule design reminds me of the Strauss Overhead Counterweight bridge in Zanesville, OH. Unlike all other bascule bridge designs I have seen, the vertical plane of the counterweight does not change as the bridge is raised. Instead linkages slightly move the pivot point as hydraulic rams push on the lower cord. Cables from the counterweight go around a curved track on the upper cord so that the horizontal forces on the hydraulic rams remain small.

Repair of Blast Furnace #7 in Indiana Harbor East

I'm seeing enough photos of Cleveland-Cliffs rebuild of their largest blast furnace that I'm going to start these notes for them. See Inland Steel for general information about this mill. C-C is doing more than just relining the furnace. For example, they are replacing parts of the conveyor belt that carries material to the top of the furnace.

"Indiana Harbor No. 7 is the largest blast furnace in North America, and for reference, produced 33% more hot metal per day than our two blast furnaces at Cleveland works combined," Cleveland-Cliffs Chairman, President and CEO Lourenco Goncalves said in a conference call with investors. "The outage includes repair to two BOF converters in the steel shop and a partial reline in several upgrades to the blast furnace." The blast furnace will be modernized to burn materials other than just the feedstock of iron ore, which should reduce its carbon footprint.

John Verlich: They pre fabbed everything down river, brought it up in huge sections on barges, collector mains, crossovers etc.. and he could swing everything from the river into place. It was quite amazing to see.
Steven Booth: it’s a big crane out at 7 Furnace, crane own & operated by Central. Made our first picks today with it on day shift, got wind out yesterday 15mph winds and boom comes down.

I don't think this is the same crane because this one has a double boom and mast whereas the above has just a single boom and mast. A later comment confirmed that this is a separate crane.

I thought the one by the furnace was a Manitowoc MLC, but I could not determine if it was 300 or 650. This photo confirms it is a MLC300.

Jay Gollner: That section has needed to be replaced since 1998, I ran the inspection on it back then when I was working for Raytheon. Whoever took over Ross Beans job should have the report.

They were out nearly a million dollars and the supervisor was out of a job!

In 2004 7 furnace went from plates to staves. Going back to the original set up on this reline, a massive undertaking. 7 had multiple burned up staves past 4 years that they have been dealing with, killing cooling circuits and using using high pressure nitrogen for cooling using “Super Coolers”.
This is my 3rd reline on the furnace & probably the last. [Steven also posted a 17 sec video. I think it shows them using a cutting torch to get rid of the old equipment.]

Alfred Petrocelli: On my first day working a Summer job as a laborer on the Blast Furnace at US Steel South Works, the Summer of ‘73, I found myself alone inside Furnace #5, as I was the only one small enough to fit back out the opening once the last piece was packed in. Outside were 5 “Blue Hats” some from Pittsburgh, shouting instructions. Your picture brought back memories.

Yes. It is the largest blast furnace in the Western Hemisphere. A comment in the base post indicates that it was built in the 1970s.

CSX/C&O State Line Tunnels between WV and VA

These tunnels carry the CSX main line through the Eastern Continental Divide. [wikimapia] The original 1870 bore is on the left (south) side and the 1932 bore is on the right. [Bridge Hunter]

Ted provided the coordinates of the tower in another group. Since the mountains in the East are green instead of brown like they are in the West, it is easy to see where the tracks disappear into the tunnel.

Given the width of the original bore, it was double track. After digging the new bore, the original bore was converted to single track. That increased the clearances for that track.

Bridge opened for the vessel named H Lee. White, basically the only cool drawbridge in Green Bay is this one because it's 6 lanes (which means it's more wide then tower drive) and the bridge blows the horn in the same pattern as the ship does if it blows the horn.
