2019 Ryfylke Tunnel in Norway is World's Longest and Deepest Undersea Road Tunnel

(Satellite)

nynas
"2013 saw the start of a major construction project – the Ryfylke tunnel, which opened to traffic just in time for the start of the new decade. This is the longest and deepest underground road tunnel in the world – 292 m [958'] below sea level – and it forms part of what is known as the Ryfast project."
"The Ryfylke tunnel is 14.3 km long and connects the two municipalities of Strand and Stavanger in southern Norway. Traffic runs in two separate tunnels, one in each direction, with a maximum gradient of 7 %. 1.2 million m3of rock was excavated during the course of the work."

CamperVanNorway
The tunnel was completed in 2019. The rock was bored with drills, explosives and conveyor belts instead of  Tunnel Boring Machines.

It cuts travel time by 40 minutes. [Facebook Reel] I guess that compares to the time needed for a ferry ride.

The tunnel is part of the Ryfast project along European route E39. [grokipedia]

This tunnel is part of the E39 modernization project. The seven yellow dots are the ferry crossings that will be replaced with bridges and/or tunnels. Construction of this tunnel started in 2018. The entire project won't be completed until 205 and will cost at least $40b.

The Ryfylke Tunnel is expected to hold the world's record for less than a decade because the Rogfast Tunnel, another E39 project, is expected to be completed in 2033. "It will be 27 kilometers long, and its two tubes, each 10.5 meters wide, will be laid at a depth of 392 meters below sea level, setting a new world record and new benchmarks in road engineering." I was going to skip yet another stone arch until I noticed that the stones change direction about halfway up the arch.

Information that used to be here about the Allegheny Portage Railroad has been moved to "Allegheny Portage Railroad Engine House #6 for an Incline."

In the above video, Linda says that this bridge is over the Redbank Creek. But since the bridge is straight, I think she is headed to the eastern portal and the bridge is over Sandy Lick Creek. The bridge on the west side is curved and is over Redbank Creek.

The Pennsy route east of town is now operated by the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad. And the Pittsburg & Shawmut roundhouse is now used by Brookville Equipment Corp. The abandoned railroad west of the tunnel is now the Redbank Valley Trail.

Robert Hartloff posted five images with the comment: "I see a lot of pictures of the famous bridge in Brookville, Pa but never of the Pennsylvania RR tunnel. It appears it was built for 2 tracks. May have been originally Lake Shore and Michigan Southern? My pictures. 10-20-22"
Shane Rosencrance: That's the PRR low grade, nee Allegheny Valley Railroad, the NYC swung across the Coder Viaduct and met the Low Grade at Rose just outside of Brookville. Trackage rights were then shared until reaching the central PA coal fields.

Erie Canal Aqueduct over Moyer Creek in Frankfort, NY

(Satellite, in this town, Canal Street replaced the canal.)

Yvonne Wall posted 10 images with the comment: "Frankfort, Aquaduct over Moyer Creek and a view of the bridge from near the canal. Dean D'Amelio did a post on the old canal and we are good friends and I asked him to help me describe it. Next it is 1914 and the New York Barge article from my newspaper collection."

Hanging by a thread- the western support wall for the aqueduct over Moyer Creek in the Village of Frankfort (Herkimer Co.) doesn’t look like it’s going to hang on too much longer. Seems the contractor working on the lot off of Cemetery St. (unrelated to the bridge/stream control project?) doesn’t care what damage they cause, and apparently the DEC doesn’t either. 😢
Good view of the wooden floor still surviving.

Erie Canal Lock #60 (Lower Macedon Double Lock)

ErieCanal_60
"Enlarged Erie Canal Lock No. 60 (also called the Lower Macedon lock) is located a mile east of the village of Macedon, NY on the north side of the existing Erie Canal, which parallels NY Route 31 at this point. It was built in 1841 as a single chamber lock with a 10 foot [3m] lift, replacing the original 1822 Clinton's Ditch lock. It was doubled in 1874, and the north chamber was lengthened at the foot (eastern) end in 1888. The towpath was on the south side. It was in use until 1914."
