1912-1968 SAL: (no Archived Bridge Hunter; no Historic Bridges; Satellite)
The SAL bridge was abandoned in 1968 in favor of the ACL bridge. [Bridge Hunter County Index]
Fortunately, the abandoned steel girder spans of the SAL bridge in the foreground allow us to see the trusses of the ACL bridge in the background.

We can clearly see gusset plates on the SAL trusses, so this bridge is not pin connected.

The ACL bridge uses steel girders in its southern approach across the flood plain.

But the SAL bridge uses trusses in its approach over the flood plain on the north side. Those trusses also have gusset plates.

Alicia Wroblewski posted four photos with the comment: "Weldon, NC."
Dre Ballard: Former SAL from Norlina to Portsmouth. The active adjacent bridge is former ACL, now CSX North End Subdivision. Weldon was a Union station stop btw the ACL and SAL.
Michael Suther: Wonder what the story is on the newer piers, could it be 1916 flood damage?
Dennis DeBruler: Michael Suther Adding new piers between old piers and putting spacers on top of the old piers is an indication that they switched from truss spans to steel girder spans.

Dennis DeBruler commented on Alicia's post The Seaboard Air Line and the Atlantic Coast Line railroads merged in 1967 to form the Seaboard Coast Line. And the SCL was quick to add tracks near the bridge so that trains on the SAL route could use the ACL bridge because the SAL bridge was abandoned in 1968. 1953/54 Norfolk Quad @ 250,000 https://web.archive.org/web/20220819025326/https://bridgehunter.com/nc/halifax/ |
