Restoring an Icon:  I give much credit to communities that make it a point to protect the rich history in their locales.  The iconic 5 Arch Bridge in Avon, NY is getting some needed attention, part of an effort to keep the limestone arch in good shape and solidifying its integrity for decades to come.  A few dozen rocks are being shored up or replaced on the 1856 arch, a bridge built by the Genesee Valley Railroad back in the day to allow trains to pass over the Conesus Outlet there.  As the historical sign indicates, Avon was a bustling railroad hub back in the early 1900’s that connected Buffalo, Rochester, Corning and Hornell.  The arch is all that remains between Avon and Mount Morris and these days the area here is a terrific little park.  Montanosa Restoration of Rochester is handling the work here.  I’d say they’re doing an amazing job—when I stopped by the other day, the new stone blended in with the old very nicely.  This project was awarded $200,000 by New York State’s Environmental Projections Fund.  It’s wonderful that an effort is made to protect history across the region.
