The 7,291' (2222m) long bridge has approaches over a half mile on both sides. The 350' (107m) high towers rest on "steel pilings extending 160 feet [49m] below sea level" and provide a deck height of 140' (43m). The lift bridge used to cause 14,000 delays annually. A ferry service was used between 1984 when the old bridge was deemed unsafe and 1991 when the new bridge opened.
