Greg Smith: On the upper right is where the original, partial bore had been made for the never-completed railroad. That may be why the white arrow is on the image.

I looks like they are building the second bore.

Blasting away for construction of the Allegheny Mountain tunnels on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in 1968 my grandfather owned the land where the Turnpike Maintenance and State Police Barracks is located  and he supplied and hauled the building timbers for the construction of the tunnels (Heiple Supply Company. )My Brother  John and Sister Judi were the first children that got to go through that tunnel.

Given the curve in the roads in the above photo, we must be looking at the East Portal.

The 6,070' (1,850m) long tunnel is the longest active tunnel in Pennsylvania.

A design is expected in 2028 to replace the tunnel with daylight.

I wonder how deep the cut will be and thus how steep the ruling grade will be.
