Greg Smith: On the upper right is where the original, partial bore had been made for the never-completed railroad. That may be why the white arrow is on the image.

The 6,070' (1,850m) long tunnel is the longest active tunnel in Pennsylvania.

A design is expected in 2028 to replace the tunnel with daylight.

  1. The Pennsylvania Turnpike is a major toll highway spanning across the state of Pennsylvania, serving as a key transportation corridor for both commuters and commercial vehicles. Known as America’s first superhighway, it set the standard for modern interstate design. It connects major cities, supports economic growth, and offers scenic drives through Pennsylvania’s diverse landscapes.
