A Chicago Bypass for Taconite

(3D Satellite)

I already knew that Powder River Base Coal was hauled to Lake Superior to bypass Chicago for shipping coal to power plants in the Detroit area. BNSF also hauls iron ore concentrate by transloading to the Great Lakes.

Notice how much ice is on the river. The Lakers push the shipping season into mid-January until they have to shut down until March. Many of the Lakers dock at a ship buiding company, e.g. FBS, so that they can have repairs and upgrades done during their downtime.

BNSF used to run a unit train of low-gondola cars carrying pellets to a Magnetation plant in Reynolds, IN as a run-through with CSX. Magnetation was mining the tailing piles in the Missabe Iron Range. [IndustrailHistory] Unfortunately, that operation went bankrupt. So I was presently surprised to see that BNSF is still hauling iron ore concentrate by transloading to Lakers.
