In June 1951, six Altamont women, including Vera Kull, Ruth Alwert, and Margaret Berkbigler were returning home aboard a train from Chicago. At 9:30 PM the C & EI train plunged off a 100 ft. trestle near Mode, IL. 16 of the 60 passengers were injured and two passengers were killed. Miraculously, the Altamont women suffered only minor injuries.
Pictured here is the train submerged in the creek.
