I have seen enough photos of some applications that they have their own posting:
- Building 110 N. Walker Drive in Chicago using a barge on the Chicago River. These VPC cranes need a smaller barge than ringer cranes because they keep the load balanced over the crawler tracks.
- The Champlain Bridge project uses some MLC650s
- The new I-74 bridge over the Mississippi River uses both MLC 300 and MLC 650.
- Building modern windmills
- Testing different configurations
- Configured with a luffer jib
- MLC 300 with a long luffer jib, a second visit that got some video of the MLC 300 in action
- MLC 300 building a new bridge at Red Wing, MN
I've accumulated enough photos that I have sorted the photos that were clearly described into MLC 300 vs. MLC 650. The cranes in this section were not clearly described, but they were posted in requests for MLC 300 or MLC 650 photos.

MLC650
650 Ton Crane |
Don Luebesmier posted Start adding the boom tomorrow ! [Reading the comments, this is a MLC 650 with Max-VPC. VPC is variable position control, which means a computer will automatically move the stack of counterweights along the rail as the boom moves to keep the unit balanced. Since they don't have much boom weight installed, note how the counterweight tray is moved all the way towards the center. As they add boom weight, I expect they will roll the counterweights away from the center. I just noticed that they are still adding counterweights to the stack. Each counterweight is "22k." It took 32-36 truckloads to bring the parts. Just a 301' main to pick 210 tons at 120'.] |
Mike Dicenzo posted 650 in Pennsylvania. Blake Crenshaw 881k David Wallace Stacked out and no matts? Trevor German David Wallace if it’s an engineered crane pad or path no mars are necessary with proper testing and manufacturers specs on ground bearing pressure. Picture doesn’t always give all the info. Michael Berry 469’ of main with 25’ EUBP Broc Marquis Worked with the 650 vpc max s-2 with 420 main and eubp and no matts. No issues. Ben Stalvey posted Here is a great ? When running a MLC 300 or MLC 650 on a wind farm. Should the counterweights also be chained down? Like shown in this picture?? Does Manitowoc recommend it?????? [The comments indicate that any chains would just snap. The solution is for the contractors to quit cutting corners and prepare the travel roads properly and then use mats for these modern, heavy cranes. The support in the back is evidently called a kickstand and is required by European regulations.] |

Timandmonica Sonnier posted Richard Morrison Still don’t like the high centre of gravity and no car body weights, sorry. Mike Hurlburt and never mind the 3 second delay. [To summarize some comments: 881,800 lb of counterweight.] Keith Eller 440,000 on its little brother. Keith Eller Putting free fall in a 330 now. [If I understand correctly, it was easy to let a load free fall with the old friction-drive cranes. But modern cranes use hydraulics and free fall has not been an option.] Blaze Zuvich 3 second delay on what? I ran a 14000 a few years ago for awhile and the 3rd drum we had put in had a 3 second delay...hated it...sweet rig though...nothing compared to that beauty though. I would be sketched out though about walking that heavy ass down an old dirt road though...a couple of front end loaders make big moves from site to site a breeze one handing mats off to another...in that case prob one on each side though going around bc I'm sure 1 mat wide isn't enough for that crane...the cost of those machines and Matt's is far less than a tore up rig of that magnitude not to mention someone's life. Timandmonica Sonnier She made it fine , months of ground prep work . Engineers did ground compaction testing. Mojave desert !!! Blaze Zuvich Looks like dry desert ground though but you never know where that old underground basement or wine cellar may be hiding that all the pre engineering and site prep work coukd have easily missed like we all saw not very long ago. [I looked for my notes on the wreck he is referring to, but could not find them. A MLC 650 tipped over forward when a track crushed the top of a hidden basement. If I remember correctly, that was the wreck where the counterweights fell and killed the operator.] Nick Reynolds I didn’t know you could build them with no back mast. Ben Stalve Corrct Nick Reynolds you sure can. The rear backmast is part of the VPC Max package. You can just run a MLC 650 with just main boom. No rear backmast unlike a 18000. Nick Reynolds Ben Stalvey that’s pretty awesome ... what’s the capacity without the max package. Ben Stalvey 716 ton Manitowoc offers a wide boom for it. Here is more about it https://www.manitowoccranes.com/.../170307-Manitowoc... Ben Stalvey When you look at the other option of bringing in a 18000. The MLC 650 has saved a few loads. But with a 18000 with maxer they are good for 825 tons. But the wheeled trays bring in more expense to. Mats ect |
