Passyunk Avenue Bridges over Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, PA

Old: (Archived Bridge Hunter; Bridge Hunter)

The bridge "nearly 4,000-feet of elevated approach structures, roadways, and intersection improvements."
[This source gives a date of 1911 for the previous bridge, but the photo of that bridge below was taken in 1909.]

I recognize the bridge design as the first-generation Chicago design. The Cortland Street Bridge was the first bridge built with this design in 1902.

The old Passyunk Avenue Bridge, as it looked in 1909. This bridge lasted till it was replaced with the current one in 1984. Anyone who lived in South Philly back in the 70's, would remember the occasional Fire Truck coming down Moyamensing Avenue with its sirens on, heading towards the bridge because it had gotten stuck in the upright position. The Passyunk Avenue Bridge is one of two draw bridges that span the Schuylkill River, the other being the Grays Ferry Avenue Bridge.

Why is so much of the approaches elevated? I can't believe this is all flood plain. That makes for a rather expensive parking lot.
Street View, Apr 2023

It looks like a trunnion, instead of a rolling, bascule bridge.
Bridges Now and Then posted
"Construction Starts on New Passyunk Avenue Bridge Superstructure, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With construction on the substructure units completed, work started on the bridge superstructure. Shown here is the lift-in operation of one of the bascule leaves in April 1982. Notice the existing Passyunk Avenue Bridge is still in operation in the background." (Modjeski and Masters)

It has a 50' (15m) clearance when closed and a navigation width of 200' (71m). [WaterWayGuide]
