posted two photos with the comment:
For many years, 67th St Tower controlled the junction of the IC (Metra) Electric Mainline and South Chicago Branch. Additionally, there were xovers on the IC (non-electric) mainline as well. The 1903 photo shows the tower when it was located on the EAST side of the ROW. The present tower (no longer in service) is located on the west side of the ROW.

2020 Update:
I've seen flyover junctions before. I just discovered that the South Chicago Branch is a "flyunder."

Joseph Tuch Santucci posted Looking northward at 67th Street in 2011 we see a train out of South Chicago coming out of the tunnel exiting the South Chicago District and entering the main line and track three. The train up ahead on on main track four will connect with the South Chicago train at 59th Street dropping passengers for the stops in between 59th and 18th Streets. My vantage point here is CN (former IC) main track two. We have a diverging clear and will be crossing from main one over to main two. In the days when the IC and ICG still owned the Metra Electric line, the two IC freight mains here were tracks five and six. There were also two tracks to the right of today's CN mains known as seven and eight. In the latter ICG and then IC days, they were shortened and eventually removed. At the end, seven extended as far as and tied into 67th Street before eventually being shortened and cut into main track two at 79th Street. After ICG sold the Electric District to Metra in 1987, mains five and six were redesignated mains one and two. |
