1891-1955,1962 US-40 Steel Bridge over Ohio River in Wheeling, WV

(Bridge Hunter; no Historic Bridges; Satellite, this bridge is why there is a remnant of Ohio Street between Front St. and the river.)

The state border runs along the west side of the Ohio River so this bridge is in Wheeling, WV. It is over the East Channel between the downtown area on the river's shore and Wheeling Island.

This bridge was replaced by the Fort Henry Bridge in 1955, and it was torn down in 1962.

This topo map is what taught me that this bridge landed at Ohio Street on the island.

This postcard confirms that the bridge was one block south of the Suspension Bridge, and it explains why the name was simply "Steel." So was the suspension bridge called the Suspension Bridge? Or the Cable Bridge?
