1941,2015 US-1+US-90 Main Street Bridge over St. Johns River in Jacksonville, FL

(Bridge Hunter; Historic Bridges; Satellite)

The official name is John T. Alsop Jr. Bridge. He was the mayor from 1923-37 and 1941-45. This bridge was given his name in 1957 shortly before his death in 1958. But, in practice, it is called the Main St. Bridge. The 2015 rehabilitation cost $11m. (It was built for $1.5m.) [TheCoastal]

The lift span is 365'. It was built by the Mt. Vernon Bridge Co., which is based in Ohio. So that company got around the country.

The top chord appearing to be continuous caught my eye. Making the truss of each approach span go higher as it approaches the tower and terminate with vertical end posts used more steel than was necessary for strength. But it provides a very pleasing appearance. And the streamlined towers are not near as deep as was the custom back then. Now that I'm thinking about it, the extra steel in the approach trusses probably help hold up the towers.

This is the Main Street Bridge in Jacksonville, Florida. It is a vertical lift bridge that was built in 1941 and carries South Main Street over the St. Johns River.

Most of the views of the bridge concentrate on the trusses. I include this view to show that the trusses are just half of the bridge. Obviously, the southern part of the river is much more shallow than the northern part.
